President Sidi Mohamed Ould Sheikh Abdellah met Monday Feb. 2nd 2008 a joint delegation from the Mauritanian Human Rights Watch and the Arab Commission for Human Rights. The meeting revolved around several topics related to human rights, including the desperate situation of the Mauritanian refugees in Senegal and Mali , the military officers who were fired from their jobs after the 2003 coup attempt, and the Mauritanian detainees at Guantanamo Bay .
The president of the Mauritanian Human Rights Watch, Mr. Mohamed Vall Ould Kah, who was a part of the delegation, drew the attention of the President of the Republic to the shameful remnants of slavery in Mauritania, and the unacceptably slow and disorganized return of our refugee citizens who were expelled from their country to Mali and Senegal by a brutal decision of the former dictator Mouawiya Ould Taya. The President of the Republic gave his commitment to the delegation for a making a serious effort to find solution to these issues. The Human rights delegation congratulated the President for the new improvements in the political and civic life in Mauritania .
